Why do we screen for hearing ?
Everyone over 65 should have a good hearing screen every two years to screen for possible MEDICAL problems.
Hearing loss is usually gradual (sudden hearing loss requires immediate attention) and is not noticed. Hearing loss can result in loss of quality of life AND correlates with increased risk of falls.
We try to screen (with a short list of questions and two fast and simple tests) every adult patient every two years at a regular office visit. This is not as good as a full hearing test but if all results are normal it is unlikely that significant problems would be missed.
